About Us

Our History

Alcon Marepha (Pty) Ltd was formed in 2001 by industrialist Edwin Dwinki Phala, Electrical Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management. Dwinki Phala was also a founding member of EON Consulting (Pty) Ltd, an engineering and management consulting company.

He developed an interest in manufacturing after being on the board of directors for both the Aberdare Group and Powertech for 12 years, earning his stripes as a black industrialist in the sector.

Dwinki Phala had a vision of creating a black owned, controlled and managed cable and conductor manufacturing entity. He eventually approached Aberdare Group to partner in the acquisition of Alcon Conductors (Pty) Ltd, after failing to raise capital to acquire it on his own. The company Alcon Marepha (Pty) Ltd was born as a result, which was majority owned by Dwinki Phala through his investment company, Lone Ranger (Pty) Ltd.

Dwinki Phala eventually bought out Aberdare Group shares in Alcon Marepha, to make Alcon Marepha the only 100% black owned aluminium overhead power conductor manufacturing company in South Africa.

Alcon’s mission is to create jobs and opportunities, through upskilling and developing their employees, recruiting many unskilled labour workers including students from tertiary institutions; and developing a workforce that can support the growth of the business.

The company has grown from manufacturing small distribution aluminium conductors to all types and sizes of aluminium overhead power conductors used for all voltages up to 765kV.

Alcon has been an approved supplier to Eskom since inception, a relationship that has contributed towards its growth in technology, quality systems, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) and creation of jobs.

Alcon’s success is attributed to strong focus on management, organizational culture of work cohesion and team work, continuous monitoring of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) developed in our business processes to ensure achievements of business objectives and monthly targets, skills transfer, continuous customer’s focus and product development.

Furthermore, the company’s ethos, which is founded in operational excellence, strong financial control and corporate governance, facilitated a highly-driven environment that ensured yearly return on investment for its shareholders.
